NDP leadership: Mulcair ponders pension plan; Nash talks gun registry

OTTAWA — NDP leadership hopeful Thomas Mulcair kicked his campaign into high gear Wednesday with a vow to create a “pension exchange,” while Peggy Nash finally weighed in on the controversial long-gun registry issue with a promise to bring it back if elected prime minister.

Mulcair, one of eight vying for leadership of the party, is proposing reforms to both the public and private pension systems and has promised that under his leadership, an NDP government would work with the provinces to double the maximum benefit under the Canada Pension Plan to up to $1,920 a month and increase the Guaranteed Income Supplement.

The reforms are identical to those proposed by the NDP in its 2011 election platform but Mulcair is seeking to take it a step further and create a “pension exchange.”

Operated by CPP, it would give Canadians the opportunity to invest in their own retirement through an insured, portable public plan that can’t be taken away.

“Canadians who choose to participate will be able to have their pension contributions deducted directly from their pay cheque and invested through the exchange in one of several investment funds including a public plan offered by the CPP Investment Board,” Mulcair said.

“This will force large financial institutions to compete for our investment dollars and guarantee both lower management fees and higher rates of return.”

Nash released a five-point plan on women’s equality that began by addressing the Conservative plan to scrap the long-gun registry.

The Toronto MP vowed to resurrect the registry and to protect the data contained within it.

It’s an issue that’s pitted rural and urban Canadians against one another and has led to divisions within the NDP but some victims’ groups have argued the registry is a good tool for police when dealing with domestic violence situations.

Paul Dewar received an endorsement from former MP, provincial member and Ontario NDP leader Mike Cassidy on Wednesday and is promising to unveil an even bigger endorsement and a shift in the direction of his campaign later in the week.

Meanwhile, Brian Topp’s latest policy paper focused on the need to abolish the Senate, introduce a mixed-member proportional election model and end the prime minister’s ability to prorogue Parliament when faced with a question of confidence.

Niki Ashton drew on the 1985 USA for Africa hit We Are the World, in calling for a “renewed vision for a bilingual, multicultural Canada” by becoming “Canada’s multicultural prime minister.

“I want to celebrate our tremendous diversity,” she said, drawing on her Greek heritage.

“I want to send the message that we are the world.”

The others in the running for the party leadership are MPs Romeo Saganash and Nathan Cullen and Martin Singh, a Nova Scotia pharmacist and businessman.

New Democrats will elect a new leader on March 24.

ਕੋਆਰਡੀਨੇਟਰ ਸੁਖਮਿੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਹੰਸਰਾ ਨੇ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਪ੍ਰੈੱਸ ਕਲੱਬ ਦੇ ਚੋਣਵੇਂ ਮੈਂਬਰਾਂ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਇਤਹਾਸਕ ਕੰਨਵੈਂਸ਼ਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਹੋਣ ਲਈ ਰਜਿਸਟਰੇਸ਼ਨਾਂ ਭਰੀਆਂ ਹਨ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਕਿਸੇ ਵੀ ਕਨੇਡੀਅਨ ਪੱਤਰਕਾਰ ਲਈ ਅਜਿਹੀਆਂ ਕੰਨਵੈਂਸ਼ਨਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਰਾਜਨੀਤਕ ਪਾਰਟੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਕੰਮ ਕਾਜ ਨੂੰ ਨੇੜਿਓੁਂ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਵੇਖਣਾ ਅਤਿ ਜਰੂਰੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
